Let’s chat about Boswellia Serrata.

Ever heard of it?

Ayurveda

In school, I studied Ayurveda, which means the “science of life.”

Ayurveda originated in India as a holistic approach to create balance within the mind and the body by aligning oneself with nature. The idea is to cleanse the body of substances that cause illness through proper diet and lifestyle.

The belief is that disease results from an imbalance of the doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha. Doshas are life energies made up of the five elements of nature (ether, fire, air, water, and earth) and pertain to an individual’s physical characteristics and personality traits. Most people exhibit a combination of doshas, but there is always one that is more dominant. (source: Institute for Integrative Nutrition)

What is Boswellia Serrata?

Boswellia (Boswellia Serrata) is an herb commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine.

It is also known as “Indian frankincense,” which totally excites me because “frankincense” is a common biblical reference (it’s used over 30 times in the bible). Back then, they clearly did not have a local pharmacy with drugs galore. They used nature for healing.

Alright, so back to Boswellia and why we are talking about it today.

To help with healing and reduce inflammation, my doctors once recommended Boswellia. And even though it’s an herb, before I take things, I like to know what I’m taking, how it will help me and all of the benefits it might provide.

I’m so excited for Boswellia Serrata after doing this due-diligence.

Boswellia Serrata could be for you, too.

The following two are my most favorite Boswellia Serrata health benefits.

Inflammation

Some sources say that Boswellia is better and more effective than NSAID’s:

Boswellia works to reduce inflammation through a different mechanism. It acts to modulate the pro-inflammatory enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX). 5-LOX is the first enzyme released in the cytokine metabolic pathway. This pathway creates leukotrienes, which are strong inflammatory substances thought to influence many disease processes including cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, & asthma. The immune modulation reduces inflammatory chemicals and symptoms of inflammation.

Colitis

Double love!

In a 2007 study of 31 people with colitis (an inflammatory bowel disease that results in chronic inflammation in digestive tract), researchers found that those who took 400 mg of boswellia extract three times daily for six weeks were more likely to go into remission than those who took a placebo. In an earlier study, 14 out of 20 colitis went into remission after taking 900 mg of boswellia daily for six weeks (compared to four out of 10 patients who took the medication sulfasalazine for the same amount of time). How I am Taking Boswellia Serrata

I am taking it via capsules right now. My dosage is as follows:

1200 mg/day for 3 days, followed by 1000 mg/day for 11 days

I am likely to go into a “maintenance mode” after that.

(Please make a note: these are high doses. Do not take this much without working with your doctor or chiropractor first.)

  1. I have not heard of it or tried it. Interesting. I’m looking into things that help reduce inflammation, as popping advil or other ibuprofen is not preferred. Fish Oil?
