Here’s something I wish more people understood about food-triggered bloating.
It usually comes down to FODMAPs: carbohydrates your gut doesn’t break down well. They reach your colon, your gut bacteria ferment them, and you get gas, bloating, pain, diarrhea, constipation, or some combination of all five.
I know how fast that turns into cutting out more and more foods. There was a time when every new symptom led me to remove another one. Identifying your triggers matters. Living in permanent restriction shouldn’t be the goal.
That’s what made me want to test FODZYME on the worst meal I could build for myself.
Sautéed onion and black beans in olive oil. Garlic powder over the top. Banza pasta. All of it in one bowl, and I ate a real portion.
If you know FODMAPs, you just winced. Onion, garlic, and beans in one bowl is about as high-FODMAP as a meal gets, and that combination used to wreck me for the rest of the day.
This time? No bloat, rumbling. And no gas later.
The difference was one packet of FODZYME, sprinkled onto the food before I ate.
This is my honest review, plus what FODZYME is, how the enzymes work, and why I pair it with my own Break Down.

What is FODZYME?
FODZYME is an enzyme powder you add directly to food to break down FODMAPs before they can trigger symptoms.
It targets 3 of the most common FODMAP groups: fructan, GOS, and lactose. You sprinkle it on the meal, mix it in, and the enzymes go to work on the food itself.
Quick refresher, because this matters. FODMAPs are a group of carbohydrates in dairy and plant foods that are known to trigger GI symptoms like bloating, gas, pain, and changes in bowel habits. This is especially true for people with IBS, but it also shows up in conditions like IBD, celiac disease, endometriosis, and PCOS.1
The problem is that FODMAPs hide in foods most of us eat every day and genuinely love. Garlic. Onion. Wheat. Beans. Certain fruits and dairy.

What’s actually in FODZYME? (the 3 enzymes)
Here’s the full breakdown of what’s in the packet and what each piece does.
Fructan hydrolase.
This is the one that sets FODZYME apart. Fructan is one of the most common FODMAP triggers, found in garlic, onion, wheat, asparagus, and many other plant foods.2 Your body doesn’t make an enzyme to break fructan down on its own. Fructan hydrolase does. In a validated gut-model study, this enzyme broke down about 90% of the fructan it was tested on (3g of inulin, roughly 6 cloves of garlic) into simple fructose within 30 minutes.3
Alpha-galactosidase.
This targets GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides), the FODMAP group in beans, legumes, and some nuts. If you’ve ever used a beans-and-gas product, this is the same enzyme family.
Lactase.
This breaks down lactose, the sugar in dairy. If dairy is a trigger for you, this is the piece doing that work.
Together, those 3 enzymes cover lactose, GOS, and fructan. The powder form matters too. It’s designed to mix directly into your food so the enzymes are spread through the meal and ready to work as you eat.3
Make note: FODZYME is tasteless. I sprinkled a full packet on my bowl and could not taste it at all.
Why fructan hydrolase is the part that matters
Here’s the thing most FODMAP enzyme products miss.
A lot of digestive enzymes on the market use alpha-galactosidase alone, which only breaks down GOS, not fructan. Others use inulinase, which only handles inulin, one narrow type of fructan.2
Fructan comes in a wide variety of shapes in the foods we actually eat. Fructan hydrolase has broad specificity, so it targets that wider range rather than one narrow slice.4 FODZYME is the only enzyme blend on the market that contains it.
That’s the whole reason I was willing to test it on a bowl of onion, garlic, and beans. The trigger in that meal is mostly fructan and GOS, and this is built for exactly that.
My honest FODZYME experience
I’ll keep this simple, because the result was simple.
I have spent years learning which foods hurt me. And because I have done so much work healing my gut, I can get by with eating almost everything now.
But even with a healed gut, you can still feel occasional bloat and gas. Not because you’re not “healed,” but rather that whenever you eat large portions of certain foods they are hard to digest. It doesn’t mean you’re not healed. It’s simply just the science of food and digestion.
So in order for me to test this, I went pretty extreme. I made a bowl on purpose, using mostly all high-FODMAP ingredients.
Onion and black beans sautéed in olive oil, garlic powder on top, Banza pasta underneath. I sprinkled one full packet of FODZYME over it, mixed it in, and ate a real portion. Not a cautious little test bite.
No bloat. Or rumbling. No delayed gas hours later.
I’ve since used it on other things too, like yogurt with blueberries and a drizzle of honey. Same result.
This is where I’ll be honest about what FODZYME is and isn’t, because that’s how I do things here.
It didn’t heal my gut. I did that for years. However, during the thick of my SIBO healing, had I had access to the FODZYME product, it would have, without-a-doubt, been part of my daily routine.
In the present, FODZYME reduced the FODMAP load of a meal so I could eat foods I love without paying for it later. For high-FODMAP meals, that’s exactly the job I want it to do.
Does FODZYME actually work? (what the research shows)
I don’t recommend things on vibes, so here’s the evidence, stated plainly.
The fructan breakdown data comes from a study using SHIME, a scientifically validated model of the human gut. In that model, FODZYME’s fructan hydrolase converted about 90% of the fructan into simple fructose within 30 minutes.3 Worth knowing: that study is in vitro, meaning it was done in a lab model of the gut, not in people. It shows the enzyme does what it claims to the food.
There’s also real-world human data. In a peer-reviewed study of people with IBS who used a FODMAP-targeting enzyme blend for 4 weeks, 73.7% reported improvement in how much their gut symptoms disrupted daily life, and 70.3% improved on a food avoidance quality-of-life measure, meaning they felt less need to avoid foods.5
Make note: this was a real-world study funded by the maker, without a placebo group, so read it as encouraging rather than proof. FODMAP enzymes reduce the FODMAP load of a meal. There are currently randomized control trials in the works on FODZYME, so look out for those studies to be published in the future. They are a tool for symptom management, not a cure for IBS or any condition. Work with your own doctor on your bigger picture.
FODZYME vs a low-FODMAP diet
A low-FODMAP diet is one of the most effective, evidence-based strategies for IBS, and it works for some other conditions too.1
But if you’ve ever tried it, you know it’s hard. It’s restrictive, it can cut your fiber intake, and for a lot of people it breeds real anxiety and fear around food.
FODZYME is a different approach to the same problem. Instead of removing the foods, you reduce their FODMAP impact as you eat them. Less restriction, less food fear, and a way to test whether FODMAPs are even your trigger in the first place.
I’m not anti-low-FODMAP. Remember, I wrote Reasonable SIBO. Low-FODMAP has its place, especially as a short-term diagnostic. But being able to eat a high-FODMAP meal I love, with an enzyme instead of a spreadsheet of banned foods, is a real quality-of-life difference.
Why I use FODZYME plus Break Down
People are going to ask why I’d use FODZYME when I make my own digestive enzyme, Break Down. Fair question.
The answer is that they do different jobs, and I use them together.
Break Down is my full-spectrum digestive enzyme with betaine HCl. It helps you break down the protein, fat, and carbohydrates in a meal and supports the stomach acid you need to actually digest food.
FODZYME is FODMAP-specific. It targets fructan, GOS, and lactose, the fermentable carbs that drive bloating and gas.
For a normal meal, Break Down is my go-to. For a high-FODMAP meal like that onion, garlic, and bean bowl, I use both: Break Down for overall digestion, FODZYME for the FODMAP load Break Down isn’t designed to target.
Here’s the side-by-side.
| FODZYME | Break Down | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | FODMAP-specific enzyme powder | Full-spectrum digestive enzyme + betaine HCl |
| Main job | Reduce the FODMAP load of a meal | Support digestion of protein, fat, and carbs |

FODZYME FAQ
What does FODZYME do?
It’s an enzyme powder you add to food to break down 3 common FODMAP groups (fructan, GOS, and lactose) before they can trigger symptoms like bloating and gas.
How do you use FODZYME?
Sprinkle it directly on your meal and mix it in, or take it with your first few bites. Let hot food cool slightly first. It’s tasteless.
Does FODZYME work for garlic and onion?
Garlic and onion are high in fructan, and fructan hydrolase (FODZYME’s signature enzyme) is designed to break fructan down. That’s the exact combination I tested it on.
Is FODZYME the same as a regular digestive enzyme?
No. Most digestive enzymes don’t touch fructan. FODZYME is FODMAP-specific. Break Down is a full-spectrum digestive enzyme. They do different jobs, which is why I use both.
Can you take FODZYME with other supplements?
I use it alongside Break Down. As always, run your specific situation by your own practitioner.
Does FODZYME cure IBS?
No. It reduces the FODMAP load of a meal to help manage symptoms. It’s a tool, not a cure.

The bottom line
For years, foods like garlic, onion, and beans meant choosing between the meal I wanted and the afternoon I’d have afterward.
FODZYME gave me a third option: eat the meal, skip the fallout.
It’s not gut healing. It’s a tool for the meals that used to cost me. For those, it’s earned a permanent spot in my kitchen.
