Viome Gut Microbiome Test Reviews {2024)

My goal with this article on the Viome Gut Microbiome Test is to:

  1. Share more about Viome, the company.
  2. Detail the test; what it is, how you do it, and what you can expect to find out by taking it.
  3. My personal results.

Who and What is Viome?

Viome is a testing kit which aims to help you discover the precise food and supplements for your body in order to restore microbiome health.

Though these kits are all the rage currently due to the explosion of gut health interest and curiosity, they are pretty commonplace at this point for you and me.

We have been interested in the health of our gut microbiomes for a very long time now!

The difference is that with companies like Viome, we can get very granular… long as they are accurate.

Naveen Jain

Viome was founded by Naveen Jain who is an entrepreneur and philanthropist driven to solve the world’s biggest challenges through innovation.

Naveen and his team use metatranscriptomic sequencing technology to allow them to see every microorganism in the gut microbiome and analyze the activity of these microorganisms.

Viome uses mRNA testing, and to date, they are the only direct-to-consumer (you can order this test yourself!) company that analyzes mRNA to seek a full understanding of what is going on inside your body.

Metatranscriptomic Technology

Through this technology, here are some of the things you will learn:

  • If your microbiome is not able to process nutrients in various foods
  • How your microbes digest the amount of protein you are eating.
  • If some of those healthy antioxidants you’re eating aren’t really benefiting you.
  • If you’re eating too much iron and promoting the growth of unwanted bacteria.

Viome Pros

  • Easy to obtain
  • Science-driven
  • Well-respected team of medical professionals
  • Actionable results
  • Comprehensive information

Viome Cons

  • Stool and blood collection fears (yes, it’s real!)
  • Supplement add-ons can be costly

By using code AGUTSYGIRL at checkout HERE, you will save $110 off your own testing kit OR use code AGUTSYGIRL10 and go HERE to get $10% off 12 months on one of your monthly health plans.

Viome Testing Process

I love documenting these sort of processes so that I can take some of the unknown and/or fears away from you.

Every single test and thing I tried on my gut healing journey came along with a sense of fear in one way or another.

I want to alleviate all of this for the next person, as often as I can.

Health Intelligence™ Test

First, it should be noted that I did the Health Intelligence™ Test.

Currently, there are three different testing options to choose from:

  1. Gut Intelligence™ Test
    1. Gut Microbiome Test (stool)
  2. Health Intelligence™ Test
    1. Gut + Cellular Test (stool + blood)
  3. Full Body Intelligence™ Test
    1. Gut Microbiome + Human Cells + Oral Microbiome (stool + blood + saliva)

Microbiome Testing Steps [with Viome]

Once you choose which test is right for you, then….

  1. Make your purchase.
  2. Viome will email you to get everything set up and started.
  3. Download the Viome app for easy access.
  4. Receive your kit in the mail.
  5. Follow the instructions regarding how to collect your sample from home (blood, stool, or both).
  6. Viome will give you a pre-addressed + pre-postage envelope to send your samples back.
  7. Once Viome receives your kit they will analyze your samples which can take up to 4 weeks. Mine only took 2-3 weeks. When the results are ready, you will receive an email.
  8. All results, recommendations, and more can be found in your account (also via the app).

Finally, you can purchase supplements from them based on their recommendations. But you do not need to. There is zero obligation.

The information is there for you to do with it as you wish.

My Personal Viome Results

Ready for the things I learned?

Here you go – my results – transparent as can be.

Viome Health results #viome

Okay, let’s break my results down so you can see the type of information you, too, can receive with the Viome Microbiome Test.

Gut Health

Honestly? It’s no surprise that I’m in the “good” range (which, by the way is as high as they rate). Their scale consists of: good, average, not optimal.

A “good” gut health score means that the activities within the gut microbiome are overall supportive of a healthy gut environment.

Updated in 2024 to include a new sampling of the Gut Health-focused scores YOU will receive:

Inflammatory Activity

  • Butyrate Production Pathways
  • LPS Biosynthesis Pathways
  • Methane Gas Production Pathways
  • Sulfide Gas Production Pathways
  • Flagellar Assembly Pathways
  • Salt Stress Pathways
  • Biofilm, Chemotaxis, and Virulence Pathways
  • Bile Acid Metabolism Pathways

Digestive Efficiency

  • Butyrate Production Pathways
  • LPS Biosynthesis Pathways
  • Methane Gas Production Pathways
  • Sulfide Gas Production Pathways
  • Flagellar Assembly Pathways
  • Putrescine Production Pathways
  • Oxalate Metabolism Pathways
  • Salt Stress Pathways
  • Biofilm, Chemotaxis, and Virulence Pathways
  • Bile Acid Metabolism Pathways

Gut Lining Health

  • Butyrate Production Pathways
  • LPS Biosynthesis Pathways
  • Methane Gas Production Pathways
  • Sulfide Gas Production Pathways
  • Flagellar Assembly Pathways
  • Salt Stress Pathways
  • Biofilm, Chemotaxis, and Virulence Pathways

Cellular & Energy Efficiency

If you want the truth, I had no idea what this one would really entail.

But in case you’re wondering, too, here is how they explain it:

When cells are lacking the nutrition they need and can’t function properly or produce energy efficiently over time, your metabolism slows, your body ages faster, and illness may occur. Your Cellular & Energy Efficiency score offers a complete picture of what is happening in the human body on the cellular level and takes into account the aging of your cells, cellular stress, cellular inflammation, along with the health of your mitochondria.

So, mine are not optimal.

Viome tells me what this means,

A Not Optimal score can mean that cells are not functioning optimally (not efficiently producing energy, not repairing DNA damage, or clearing metabolic waste products), resulting in accelerated aging as well as poor metabolic, cardiovascular health, and brain health. Your cells could be undergoing stress due to oxidative stress, inflammation, or environmental toxins. To improve this score, we may recommend antioxidants or anti-inflammatory food and supplements, sufficient hydration, polyphenols to neutralize free radicals, and supplements that act as cofactors for these pathways.

To be really honest with you, THIS result does not surprise me in the least bit.

The reason is because for the amount of activity I do, I do not think I obtain the level of nutrients I need.

When we moved back to MN from CA, we (literally) moved to a food dessert. There is no grocery store here, so I can only image that the amount of true nutrients I’m getting on a daily basis is not optimal.

You, too, will learn the following as it relates to your overall Cellular Health:

  • Mitochondrial Biogenesis Pathways
  • Energy Production Pathways
  • Cellular Stress
  • Cellular Senescence
  • Immune System Activation

Immune System Health

I fell into the average, not good, category. This is where most people fall, and I’m not that far off of “good,” so I definitely know I’m close and can get there.

When you get the results, Viome explains more about Not Optimal + Good, so you will have to read between the lines for the middle.

It’s not hard!

What you’ll learn regarding your immune system health:

  • Inflammatory Activity
  • Cellular Stress
  • Gut Lining Health
  • Immune System Activation

Inflammation Response

Mine is Good!

Here is what you’ll learn:

  • Cellular Stress
  • Microbiome-Induced Stress
  • LPS Biosynthesis Pathways
  • Methane Gas Production Pathways
  • Sulfide Gas Production Pathways
  • Flagellar Assembly Pathways
  • Putrescine Production Pathways
  • Salt Stress Pathways
  • Biofilm, Chemotaxis, and Virulence Pathways

According to Viome, this means,

Your gut microbiome is contributing to anti-inflammatory activity and your immune system is able to efficiently respond to and regulate inflammatory activity from infection or injury so that it does not negatively impact your host cells.

Note: this does NOT surprise me since I healed my SIBO PLUS take Tummy Soothe daily!

Misc. Testing Results

You’ll also make note of my biological age, which is my true age. I’m not sure how much I believe the biological age factor because it is based on both blood and saliva. I did not do the saliva.

To that end, you can also see I don’t have Oral Health and/or Heart & Metabolic Health scores.

If those are of interest to you, just be sure to grab the Full Body Intelligence™ Test.

Nutrition Recommendations

Based on all testing results, Viome provides a nutrition plan which is designed to improve your health scores over the next 6 months.

Your personal food categories break down like this:

  1. Superfoods: Meet your food destiny. These are your most beneficial foods.
  2. Enjoy: Build a strong foundation with these nutrient dense foods.
  3. Minimize: We suggest limiting these foods. You may eat them in moderation if you strongly desire.
  4. Avoid: These foods are your personal kryptonite.

When you click into each category, a list personalized to and for you is provided.

I’ll share some of mine with you!

Note: that was actually my entire list of Superfoods.

Viome Gut Microbiome Test Reviews {2022} A Gutsy Girl's list A Gutsy Girl's Superfood list

A Gutsy Girl’s Viome ENJOY List

This list is much larger, so I’ll share just some:

  • avocado
  • bamboo shoots
  • basil
  • beef
  • black beans
  • bone broth
  • brown rice
  • cantaloupe
  • cashews
  • cheese (cow milk)
  • chia seeds
  • coconut oil
  • fennel seed
  • ghee
  • ginger
  • grapefruit
  • kale
  • lemon
  • maitake mushrooms
  • miso
  • oysters
  • plantain
  • seaweed
  • shrimp
  • thyme
  • turkey
  • vinegar
  • yogurt (plain)

A Gutsy Girl’s Viome MINIMIZE List

This list, similar to the enjoy list, is also fairly lengthy. Here are some of the items on the list, though:

  • almonds
  • banana
  • beet
  • cassava
  • couscous
  • dates
  • grapes
  • leek
  • millet
  • okra
  • peanuts
  • pineapple
  • pork
  • potato
  • spinach
  • stevia
  • white rice
  • zucchini

A Gutsy Girl’s Viome AVOID List

There were only 6 items on this list for me.

They include:

  • apple
  • bell pepper
  • cucumber
  • paprika
  • pepino melon
  • tomato

And finally? My list of supplement recommendations.

According to Viome, my precision formula contains 43 nutrients and 16 probiotics + prebiotics.

This list is obviously huge and not only does it list out specific ingredients, but it also tells the amount I should get.

Here are three thoughts when I look over my personal supplement list:

  1. They make sense because they are all things I don’t regularly take.
  2. I question how they got those specific amounts I personally need?
  3. I love that when you click on each item, they tell you all about it so you can receive more education.

While I can purchase custom supplements from them, I will not. I have my own (highly trusted) supplements sources, including MY OWN SUPPLEMENT LINE.
