My goal today is not only to share more about fulvic acid, but also provide the health benefits of fulvic acid.

When I started my supplement line, Gutbyo[me], it was because I already knew the supplements women in the Gutsy community needed most.

Because I was you. And because I had tried (literally probably) hundreds during my years spent focused on all things healing my gut and gut health in general.

But what I didn’t expect after starting the supplement line was just how interested I would become in researching all different types of supplements conducive for the gut.

In fact, I started writing and researching so much that I put together a 30 Days of Supplement Information: Gut Health + Healing Supplements 101 AND started a weekly Supplement Sunday newsletter so I would have a place to only share about what I was learning on the supplement front.

[By the way, if you want to get these Sunday emails, you can subscribe HERE.]

Anyways, I stumbled upon fulvic acid supplements when I was researching both Ayurveda + enzymes one day. More on that below.

So here is what I learned, and what I want to share with you today.

What is Fulvic Acid?

Simply put,

Fulvic acid is a chemical compound that’s formed when microorganisms in soil break down plant material over long periods of time. (source)

It is made up of:

  • trace minerals
  • electrolytes
  • fatty acids
  • silica (which boosts collagen synthesis)
  • prebiotics
  • probiotics

You’ll also see it talked about alongside humic acid. This is because fulvic acid is a type of humic acid. Both come from substances known as “humates.”

Fulvic acid, in particular, though, has a smaller molecular structure which can carry many times their own weight in minerals. They are formed through microbial decay, and bind to nutrients and transfer those nutrients into plants. (source)

The reason this is all important is due to the fact that mineral depletion is getting worse each year. The healthy soil we once had isn’t as common any longer.

Wellness Mama reports,

Mineral depletion of the soil is so bad in the US, that in 1997, you’d have to eat 26 apples to get the same amount of iron from an apple eaten in 1950.

Dr. August Dunning

And two time Nobel Prize winner and renowned scientist, Dr. Linus Pauling, stated to the 74th Congress of the United States back in 1936, “Every ailment, every sickness, and every disease can be traced back to an organic mineral deficiency.” (source)

Which leads me to minerals in general.

The Importance of Minerals

Minerals are essential nutrients for the body to develop and function properly.

As it relates to gut health for the human body in particular, one of the most important roles minerals play is in creating enzymes for digestion, energy production, and metabolic processes.

Minerals help create enzymes for digestion, energy production, and metabolic processes.

You already know about some of the most common minerals as they relate to digestive health (because I’ve featured them):

  1. Master Guide to Types of Magnesium
  2. Zinc
  3. Potassium + Sodium

But our bodies are becoming more easily depleted of minerals due to factors like:

  • soil depletion
  • general poor diet
  • stress
  • alcohol
  • antibiotics
  • birth control pills
  • nutrient absorption issues that coincide with chronic health issues
  • modern farming practices

Fulvic Acid in Ayurvedic Medicine

Before I share the health benefits of fulvic acid (for both digestive health and in general), I want to quickly make a note about it as it relates to Ayurveda.

You might be wondering why Ayurveda?

In case you missed it, I’m going back to school to study Ayurveda with Deepak Chopra!

Anyways, while researching Ayurveda, I stumbled across this fact,

For thousands of years, shilajit has been used in traditional, Eastern and Ayurvedic medicine in India and Nepal for its rejuvenating and anti-aging properties. (source)

So I dug in a little deeper, and found that,

Shilajit has been used therapeutically for centuries in traditional healing practices, including Ayurvedic medicine, to treat conditions like diabetes, altitude sickness, asthma, heart ailments, and digestive and nervous disorders. Fulvic acid is believed to be responsible for many of shilajit’s medicinal properties. (source)

By the way, Shilajit is a an herb and mineral used in Ayurvedic medicine. It contains fulvic acid.

Health Benefits of Fulvic Acid from A Gutsy Girl agutsygirl.com

You have likely already started seeing the health benefits of fulvic acid pop up due to all the things I’ve already discussed in this article.

But I want to provide you with some research regarding fulvic acid and the gut in particular:

Click HERE to save this information for later.

  1. Fulvic acid is suggested to improve the gut flora, nutrient absorption, and heal adverse disorders related to the gut. (source)
  2. Benefits of fulvic acid occur when minerals and trace elements from food come into contact with fulvic acid, they are dissolved into a form that makes them more active and more available to the body. (source)
  3. It can act as an immune modulator for immune function, influence the redox state, and potentially affect gut health. Fulvic acid is shown to decrease proinflammatory markers but also activate the immune system to kill bacteria. (source)
  4. Can have anti-diarrheal effects in animals and humans. (source)
  5. Promotes ulcer healing. (source)
  6. There is some evidence that consuming fulvic acid can help decrease digestive disorders and, including SIBO symptoms (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) and inflammatory bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. (source)
  7. Produces enzymes
  8. Organisms we obtain from fulvic acid can be taken in small doses and still cause fast, significant improvements in the ratio of bacteria living in the gut. This helps lower many unwanted digestive symptoms, like constipation, bloating, diarrhea and food sensitivities. (source)

Plant-based trace minerals are essential for the bacteria in your microbiome.

These are the best trace minerals available.

Without proper trace minerals in your gut, adding different strains of bacteria will have minimal impact on gut health.

Good bacteria and trace minerals work together as a team for a healthy microbiome.

But it’s not just the digestive tract that benefits from fulvic acid.

Here are 14 other potential health benefits of fulvic acid:

  1. Improves circulation
  2. Increases energy levels
  3. Assimilates macro + micro nutrients
  4. Maintains optimum alkalinity and pH levels
  5. Protects against unnatural oxidation
  6. Complexes nutrients into smaller particles
  7. Enables the body to absorb vitamins and minerals more effectively
  8. Cleanses toxins and heavy metals
  9. Provides vital electrolytes

This organic material comes from a forested region in the Southern United States, with its own pure water aquifer naturally filtering the rich plant-based humic shale deposits.

They have a proprietary organic 3-year process which enables them to provide the purest and most concentrated bio-available fulvic acid in the world for human health.

Here are 8 other things that make the Optimally Organic Fulvic Ionic Minerals superior to other products containing fulvic acid:

  1. Their Fulvic Acid is Water-Extracted without Chemicals using a proprietary and patented process that is 100% from nature.
  2. Optimally Organic has the purest source of Bio-available Fulvic Ionic Minerals in the world, extracted from a freshwater/saltwater source of humic shale from the southern part of the United States that is NOT laden in heavy metals like our competitors’ fulvic acid sources.
  3. Their Ionic Minerals contain silver ions, which is healthy for you and helps preserve the Fulvic Ionic Minerals naturally for many,, many years, while our competitors’ Fulvic Acid products develop yeast growth within just 9-12 months.
  4. They will always offer the guaranteed lowest price per dose because they are the manufacturer and have no “middle man”.
  5. Optimally Organic’s Fulvic Ionic Minerals are NOT extracted from leonardite, coal, fossilized peat, or humates from New Mexico that are high in carbon like most of their competitors.
  6. They offer the most concentrated source of Fulvic Ionic Minerals™ – our 2oz bottle of X350 provides a full 6 month supply for about the same price as our competitors’ Fulvic Acid with a 1 – 2 month supply.
  7. Optimally Organic’s Fulvic Ionic Minerals™ are packaged in glass cobalt bottles, not in plastic bottles that leach toxic dioxins into the Fulvic Ionic Minerals (Fulvic Acid is highly reactive). Most of their competitors sell a tainted, toxic product in a plastic bottle to save themselves money, at your expense.
  8. Last, but certainly not least, they contribute 10% of all profits to non-profit organizations focused on providing life essentials to those most in need.

They even have small amounts that children can take; 1 drop in 7 oz of water per 65 lbs of body weight.

As always, children and pregnant women should always consult with a doctor prior to use of this (or any) supplement)

Potential Side Effects of Fulvic Acid

You know that I am always trying to share all sides to anything I share.

First and foremost, make sure that you’re always reading dosage directions carefully when supplementing with fulvic acid, since using too much can lead to unbalanced mineral levels in the body. For the Optimally Organic one, see above for how to take.

Note that fulvic acid is safe for most people to take, but it’s not as common as, say, digestive enzymes or magnesium, so there isn’t a ton of research.

Still, it seems to pose very few side effects when taken as prescribed.

That being said, remember that a huge benefit of fulvic acid is that it helps detoxify the body.

In any detoxification, you may experience temporary symptoms like: diarrhea, cramps, fatigue, headaches, or nausea. I have detailed Gut Bacteria Die Off Symptoms in great detail HERE for reference.

If you are ever concerned about any supplement, dose, or symptoms always be sure to consult with your medical doctor or other healthcare provider first.
