During Spartan Training, Week 3, I found a new silver lining.

Day 19: Fake It Till You Make It

Don’t yet see yourself as a super-healthy person? Experiment with doing a little of what you’d do if you were already supremely healthy and fit. As often as you can, act as if your commitment were unwavering. Revolutionary Act #19, powered by Experience Life

During the Spartan Training recap last week, I told you that I sprained my ankle. I was (more than) bummed, but I took it as my opportunity to rest when I could and find alternatives in other places.

Instead of feeling sorry for myself that I couldn’t run or do anything high intensity on my feet, I hit the pool. Last Monday I was still in quite a bit of pain, and my foot was really puffy, but placing it in the water and getting slight movement felt great on it. I didn’t push anything too hard, but I did swim about 20 laps (mostly with my other leg and arms), and immediately upon getting out of the pool I thought,

This is the silver lining to my injury.

I swam in high school for one season. Hated it, and not because I hated swimming, but I didn’t like the competition part of it. I loved practice. I could swim for days (not really, swimming is really hard!)

On Tuesday when I went back to the pool, I brought my goggles. Today my foot had improved majorly, and I swam 30 laps. Injury reminded me of how much I love to swim (and also what an awesome cross-training workout it is).

Monday: Swim

Tuesday: Swim

Wednesday: OFF (travel day)

Thursday: Upper body + 10 min. bike

Friday: Lower body

Saturday: OFF (travel day)

Sunday: OFF

My foot felt almost completely recovered by Thursday, but I chose to take it easy for most of the week. I was tempted to do a long run yesterday but ultimately decided that taking almost a full week off from anything high impact was a much smarter idea.

I am looking forward to a fresh week of training this week, and I am also looking forward to more time in the pool…..

Because when things don’t go our way, there is always a silver lining to be found.
