And even though I have my own Move Now supplement, I was wanting to explore even more forms of magnesium and other amino acids for optimizing sleep.
I had been hearing about the BIOptimizers Sleep Breakthrough product, so I decided to give it a try, do a little experiment, and report back to you.
Sleep Breakthrough is a comprehensive sleep drink mix created by BIOptimizers that combines multiple forms of magnesium with calming amino acids and other sleep-supporting nutrients.
Unlike single-ingredient magnesium supplements, this product takes a multi-pronged approach to addressing the various factors that can disrupt sleep quality.
The product comes in three flavor options:
- Sleep Breakthrough Blue Berry Dreams – The “Deep Sleep Formula”
- Sleep Breakthrough Tropical Dreams – The “Extended Sleep Formula”
- Magnesium Breakthrough (unflavored) – This is the one I have. But Sleep Breakthrough does NOT come in an unflavored powder version. If you’re looking for unflavored options, you’ll need the capsules. BIOptimizers does make an unflavored version of their “Magnesium Breakthrough” product – the one I have – (which is their standalone magnesium supplement), but that’s a different product entirely from Sleep Breakthrough.
What caught my attention about this formula is that it doesn’t just rely on one type of magnesium.
Instead, it includes multiple magnesium forms to target different aspects of relaxation and sleep.
This matters because each form of magnesium has different absorption rates and effects on the body.
Understanding BIOptimizers’ Sleep & Magnesium Products
Before we dive into the formulas, it’s important to clarify that BIOptimizers makes two distinct product lines that work together:
Sleep Breakthrough – A comprehensive sleep formula with magnesium PLUS calming amino acids and botanicals specifically designed for sleep support. Unlike single-ingredient magnesium supplements, this product takes a multi-pronged approach to addressing the various factors that can disrupt sleep quality.
Sleep Breakthrough comes in three versions:
- Blue Berry Dreams powder (the “Deep Sleep Formula”)
- Tropical Dreams powder (the “Extended Sleep Formula”)

Many people use BOTH products together (HI – I am “many people”) – Magnesium Breakthrough to fill their overall magnesium needs, and Sleep Breakthrough for targeted sleep support. I’ll break down all the formulas so you can decide what’s right for you.
What caught my attention about these formulas is that they don’t just rely on one type of magnesium. Instead, they include multiple magnesium forms to target different aspects of relaxation and sleep.
This matters because each form of magnesium has different absorption rates and effects on the body.
Different forms of magnesium serve different purposes. Some are better for muscle relaxation, others for calming the nervous system, and still others for supporting neurotransmitter production. By combining multiple forms, you’re theoretically covering more bases.

Breaking Down ALL the Formulas
BIOptimizers created different versions because not everyone responds the same way to sleep supplements. About 10% of people actually feel energized by GABA (a common sleep ingredient), so they developed alternatives.
Sleep Breakthrough Blue Berry Dreams (Deep Sleep Formula)
This is what they call their “deep sleep formula” and it’s designed to help you fall asleep quickly and experience high-quality, restorative sleep.
Active Ingredients:
- Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine HCl)
- Magnesium (multiple forms)
- Zinc
- Potassium (enhanced levels)
- Glycine
- Taurine
- Bamboo Leaf Extract
- L-Theanine
- Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) – reduced amount compared to earlier formulas
- Magnolia Bark Extract (Honokiol + Magnolol)
Other Ingredients: Malic Acid, Organic Grape Juice Powder, Blue Spirulina (Phycocyanin) for color, Calcium Citrate, Organic Mixed Berry Powder, Organic Monk Fruit Extract, Thaumatin Powder, Organic Beetroot Juice Powder for color
This formula contains enhanced potassium levels, a reduction in GABA, and the addition of Magnolia Bark Extract. The Blue Berry flavor comes from organic ingredients rather than artificial flavoring.
Sleep Breakthrough Tropical Dreams (Extended Sleep Formula)
This is the “extended sleep formula” designed for even deeper sleep and enhanced dream activity.

For those who prefer capsules or need something travel-friendly, BIOptimizers created a capsule version.

By removing the flavoring and reducing some of the glycine, they were able to lower the production cost and make this the most affordable option. The capsules contain NO GABA, making them similar to the Tropical Dreams formula in that regard.
Recommended dosage: 2 capsules taken 30-60 minutes before bed
Magnesium Breakthrough Unflavored Powder – The Foundation
Now, let’s talk about Magnesium Breakthrough – this is a completely separate product from Sleep Breakthrough, and it’s what I’d call the “foundation” magnesium supplement.
While Sleep Breakthrough includes magnesium as part of a comprehensive sleep formula, Magnesium Breakthrough is a pure, full-spectrum magnesium supplement designed to address the widespread magnesium deficiency that affects over half the population.
What Makes It Different?
Most magnesium supplements only contain one or two forms of magnesium. The problem? Each form of magnesium benefits different tissues and organ systems in your body. If you’re only taking one or two forms, you’re likely still deficient in certain areas.
Magnesium Breakthrough is the only supplement (to BIOptimizers’ knowledge) that contains the full spectrum of 7-8 highly bioavailable forms of magnesium, each serving a specific purpose.
Truthfully, the Magnesium Breakthrough product is exactly why I wanted to try BIOptimizers to begin with.
Since I had already written about all forms of magnesium, I knew it was critical to get more than just the glycinate form.

L-Glycine

I want to break this down for you so you can see exactly what I did (and what happened).
p.s. I tracked my sleep for these nights via my Oura ring.
Night One: 1-hour before bedtime
- Sleep Breakthrough Blue Berry Dreams x 2 scoops
- Move Now x 2 capsules
I slept like a rock star. Oura told me this the following morning:
“A steady night of sleep,” which included:
- 2 hours and 2 minutes of REM sleep and
- 1 hour and 1 minute of deep sleep
Night Two: 1-hour before bedtime
- Sleep Breakthrough Tropical Dreams x 2 scoops
- Move Now x 2 capsules
I made note when I woke up this morning that I had a ton of super strange dreams. But Oura told me, “You were efficient. Your sleep efficiency was optimal.”
I got:
- 2 hours of REM sleep and
- 51 minutes of deep sleep
Night Three: 1-hour before bedtime
- Magnesium Breakthrough, unflavored powder x 2 scoops
- Move Now x 2 capsules
I felt great when I woke up. Oura told me, “Sharp as a tack! Keep up these healthy sleep habits to improve your reaction time and decision-making!”
This night was:
- 2 hours and 4 minutes of REM sleep and

First Overall Impressions
The taste was surprisingly pleasant. The Blue Berry Dreams flavor reminded me of a light berry drink – not overly sweet or artificial tasting. While I like the flavor of Tropical Dreams, I prefer the flavor of Blue Berry Dreams. And besides that color….. 🙂
The powder dissolved easily without clumping, which is always a plus.
The serving size is 2 scoops (about 1 teaspoon), though BIOptimizers emphasizes that everyone has an optimal dose for their brain and body.
The product description mentions that “when your head hits the pillow, you’ll pass out almost instantly,” and while that’s a bit of an exaggeration for me, I did fall asleep noticeably faster than usual.
Waking up in the morning didn’t feel foggy or sluggish, which can sometimes happen with sleep aids.
Instead, I felt rested but alert – the way you’re supposed to feel after good sleep. No grogginess, no feeling like I needed extra time to “wake up.” Just refreshed and ready to start the day.
Note: It’s also been beautiful and sunny in Minnesota, so that ALSO helps! Can’t discount the weather for impacting our days!
Sleep Insights
Now, here’s where this all gets really interesting….
PRIOR to doing this experiment, I didn’t read or study the products in detail.
In other words, I did not know that Blue Berry Dreams was for deep sleep and Tropical Dreams was the extended sleep.
I got the most deep sleep when I took Blue Berry Dream. And I had those crazy dreams when I took Tropical Dreams.
Interestingly, when I simply took Magnesium Breakthrough with my Move Now, the data was somewhere in between and I did not experience the dreams.
All of this to say is that my body works almost exactly with/as the product states.
I’m MOST impressed by the deep sleep BUT I love the weird dreams. Is that strange?! Dreams are fascinating to me so when I can have them, I’m pretty excited!
My next action-steps are going to be as follows:
- Toggle between Blue Berry Dreams and Tropical Dreams (alternating every other night)
- Taking just 1/2 scoop of the Magnesium Breakthrough in the MORNING. I’m doing this because I’ve been under massive amounts of stress.
Who Needs Magnesium Breakthrough?
Honestly? Almost everyone. Modern agricultural practices have depleted soil of magnesium, stress depletes our magnesium stores, and most people don’t get enough through diet alone.
You especially need magnesium if you:
- Experience stress regularly (which depletes magnesium)
- Exercise frequently (physical activity increases magnesium needs)
- Take vitamin D supplements (vitamin D supplementation increases magnesium requirements)
- Have digestive issues that may impair absorption
- Consume alcohol regularly
- Take certain medications (diuretics, proton pump inhibitors, etc.)
- Have trouble falling or staying asleep
- Experience muscle cramps, tension, or spasms
- Feel anxious or have racing thoughts
- Have low energy or fatigue
The Difference Between Magnesium Breakthrough and Sleep Breakthrough
This is crucial to understand:

Use this to meet your daily magnesium needs and address deficiency. It WILL support better sleep because adequate magnesium is essential for sleep, but it’s not specifically designed as a sleep aid.
Sleep Breakthrough is a targeted sleep formula that includes magnesium PLUS specific amino acids (glycine, taurine, theanine, GABA) and botanicals (magnolia bark) that directly promote sleep onset, sleep quality, and dream activity. It’s designed specifically for the sleep challenges that magnesium alone doesn’t fully address.
Can you take both? Absolutely! In fact, BIOptimizers recommends stacking them:
- Take 2 capsules (or 1-2 scoops) of Magnesium Breakthrough earlier in the day or with dinner
- Take Sleep Breakthrough 30-60 minutes before bed
[I didn’t do it this way in the beginning, but this is now my strategy for moving forward.]
This gives you comprehensive magnesium support throughout the day PLUS the targeted sleep support at night.
Since I’m your Gutsy BFF, I just have to tell you to be mindful of your total magnesium intake – you don’t want to overdo it and end up with digestive upset.
Flavored vs. Unflavored Magnesium Breakthrough
Magnesium Breakthrough also comes in flavored powder versions (like Raspberry Lemonade) if you find the unflavored version unpalatable.
The unflavored version has a slightly chalky, mineral taste that some people don’t mind, but others prefer to mask it with flavoring or mix it into smoothies. TO BE HONEST: I didn’t think the unflavored version had any flavor to it. It was perfectly fine!
The unflavored version is ideal if you:
- Want zero sweeteners (even natural ones)

Pro tip: If you choose unflavored, try mixing it with:
- Fresh lemon or lime juice

How Does BIOptimizers Compare to Standard Magnesium?
This is the question I kept asking myself. And then, why I just had to try it for myself.
I already have a magnesium supplement that works beautifully. So why would someone need something more complex?
The answer comes down to individual needs and sleep challenges.
If your sleep issues are primarily related to magnesium deficiency – muscle tension, mild restlessness, or general difficulty unwinding – then a high-quality magnesium glycinate like Move Now may be all you need. [Also, Move Now contains 300mg in the glycinate form alone. This is a much higher dosage than the BIOptimizers product contains. And this is also why I take both.]
But if you’re dealing with more complex sleep disruption – racing thoughts, difficulty staying asleep, frequent middle-of-the-night wake-ups, or a mind that simply won’t shut off despite feeling physically tired – then the additional amino acids and compounds in Sleep Breakthrough might address factors that magnesium alone cannot.
Think of it this way: magnesium is foundational. It’s essential. But sometimes you need more than just the foundation to build a complete structure.
Another key differentiator is the melatonin-free approach. Many over-the-counter sleep aids rely heavily on melatonin, which can cause dependency, desensitization, and that dreaded groggy feeling the next morning.
Sleep Breakthrough instead provides the precursors and cofactors your body needs to produce melatonin naturally, which means you’re working with your body’s natural rhythms rather than overriding them.
Which Formula Should You Choose?
With multiple options across both product lines, you might be wondering which combination is right for you.
Here’s my take based on the ingredient differences, user feedback, and my personal experience:
If You’re Just Starting Out:
Start with Magnesium Breakthrough (unflavored or flavored powder, or capsules)
Why? Because magnesium deficiency is incredibly common, and addressing this foundational deficiency often improves sleep naturally without needing additional sleep-specific ingredients.
Give it a few days to see if adequate magnesium alone resolves your sleep issues.
If basic magnesium supplementation doesn’t fully resolve your sleep challenges, then add Sleep Breakthrough.

No supplement is perfect for everyone, and it’s important to be realistic about potential limitations. While none of the below affected me personally, I still like to share for full and honest transparency.
Cost factor. Sleep Breakthrough is more expensive than a basic magnesium supplement because it contains more ingredients. You’ll need to decide if the additional benefits justify the higher price point for your situation.
More ingredients mean more variables. If you’re sensitive to supplements or prone to reactions, having multiple ingredients makes it harder to identify what might be causing any issues. [Remember: Ingredients vs Ingredient(s)]
It’s not a magic pill. No supplement can overcome poor sleep hygiene, excessive screen time before bed, or an inconsistent sleep schedule. Sleep Breakthrough works best as part of a comprehensive approach to better sleep.
Flavor preferences vary. While I enjoyed the taste, some people prefer unflavored options or may find even natural flavoring unappealing.
The Bottom Line
So, do you need Sleep Breakthrough if you’re already taking magnesium?
That depends on your current sleep quality and challenges.
