So I got obsessed with protein mug cake recipes.
Why?
Well because I love protein and cake, so obviously I should blend them together to make a high-protein mug cake.
Why Choose a Protein Mug Cake?
There are many reasons for why you might choose a protein mug cake, but (in addition to the above) here are the reasons I love making them:
1
Satisfies the sweet tooth
Just because you’re trying to heal your gut doesn’t mean you have to forego dessert. You simply have to choose a healthy way for going about it.
Because chocolate always satisfies my sweet tooth, this is one way I can achieve it all.
2
Extra protein
I’m constantly figuring out even more ways to get added protein into my diet.
While my protein staples are still whole-food ingredients like chicken, turkey, beef, salmon, tuna, and beans, the protein mug cake recipe provides even more protein.
3
Multiple combinations
Once you have your easy protein mug cake base, you can figure out different combinations for any flavors desired.
For example, you can swap the chocolate protein powder for vanilla protein powder.
Or instead of using a large egg you can swap for a flax egg.
If you want it spicier, you can add a pinch of ginger or cayenne powder. And on and on.
4
They are easy to make
The way I make these is simple: combine all ingredients into a small dish and place in the microwave for one minute. That’s it.
Now, I know that this isn’t the option for everyone, as some refuse to make a microwave protein mug cake (due to the microwave component). But I do use the microwave for this.
For many things, I try to avoid the microwave, but it’s more of an 80/20 for us.
Anyways, when you use the microwave, this is like a 5-minute tops healthy dessert coming straight your way.

One very important thing to make note of is that my protein mug cake recipes aren’t like many others.
Mine do not include:
- gluten
- dairy
- refined sugars
Sometimes I even remove the egg.
And they are always made for one, as a single-serving cake, because if you’re like me sharing isn’t always caring 🙂
So today I’m giving you the base ingredients for this single serving dessert, and then 3 of my favorite, perfect sweet treat, easy protein powder mug cake recipes.
How to Make a Protein Mug Cake: Base Ingredients

Today, LMNT brought back their seasonal Chocolate Medley, which is my absolute favorite.
The three flavors in the medley include:
- Chocolate Mint
- Chocolate Raspberry
- Chocolate Chai
By far, the easiest way I incorporate these into my everyday routine is by adding one of the flavors to my morning coffee and/or un-latte.
BUT…..I also love getting creative, like using them in this simple way via my Chocolate Mint Protein Mug Cake.
This chocolate protein mug cake tastes like a thin mint!
p.s. I’ve dropped the full recipe guide for the LMNT Chocolate Medley beneath this recipe.

Vanilla Mug Cake Recipe

For this recipe, I kept it super minimal.
I also used an egg vs the flax egg.
And I loved it! It tastes like birthday cake but with healthy ingredients.
The next time I make it, I’m going to add the chocolate chips on top so it’s more like a chocolate-chip cookie.
Here are the Vanilla Mug Cake ingredients you need:
- 2 heaping Tbsp vanilla protein powder
- 1/2 Tbsp coconut flour
- 2 tsp monk fruit (I used golden)
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1 whole egg
- 1/2 Tbsp vanilla extract
- 1 Tbsp non-dairy milk
How to make it:
- In a small, microwave-safe mug (or bowl) mix together the dry ingredients (first 4).
- Add in the wet ingredients (next 3)
- Completely mix together
- Place in the microwave for 1 minute
- Enjoy!
One big difference between using an egg and a flax egg is the final cake batter texture.
When you use an egg, it’s almost got a rubber – or sponge-like texture.
It also holds together better.
There IS a difference in texture between the regular and flax egg, but I’m guessing you’ll start making these so often that you’ll quickly figure out which one you prefer.
Gut Healthy Chocolate Ginger Mug Cake

- 1 Just Thrive Health probiotic
- 1 flax egg
- 2 heaping Tbsp plant-based milk

How to make it:

- Add in the wet ingredients (next 2) (Note: Remember that for the flax egg you use 1 Tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 Tbsp water)
