I mentioned my Paleo Portobello Mushroom Pizza awhile back, so I’m excited to share it on a Friday, just in time for weekend eats.

But let’s chat about the “juju.”
Have you ever noticed that when you get run down, depressed or negative, your gut issues flare and unhealthy tendencies knock at your door? Or how about when you allow those same people into your life, day-after-day-after-day?
I have been there, on far too many occasions, but I have broken free from most of it and I have fired the “Debbie Downers” from my life.
In my story, I talk about what happened when I first moved to Los Angeles, right after college:
At this point, my tonsils and adenoids were gone, but I was a mess. I was stressed 24/7. I was broke. I missed home. I hated LA. I ate. And then I didn’t eat. I worked out. And then I didn’t work out. I was miserable in my corporate suit and nylon hose each day. My stomach pain was horrendous. Sometimes the bathroom wasn’t close enough; others, I could only wish a bathroom break would hit. All along, my mouth was on fire; talking was a chore.
Inflammation had taken over my whole body, but it was made worse because I was run down, depressed, negative and reactive.
These are the pieces to healing the gut and healing the body that no one talks about. Everyone wants the quick fix with drugs and medication (and even with food), but lifestyle? Lifestyle is by far the hardest to deal with, overcome and steer to the healthiest and most positive path.
And this I promise you, you will never go into remission and/or 90+% heal (if you have digestive disease, you won’t 100% heal – there is no cure) if you don’t put forth the effort into lifestyle.
Creativity, finances, career, education, health, physical activity, home cooking, home environment, relationships, social life, joy and spirituality – all of these are things that I then studied and became obsessed with as a means to healing (part of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition Curriculum).
And I began to heal, heal and then heal more.

Okay, okay….now for the recipe! I wanted to share something pomegranate-y (<- I know that’s not a word, but work with me here) since the holidays are looming, and pomegranates are in season!

With a complex, mind-blowing flavor that explodes like a firecracker (don’t omit the cayenne), this is a heart-healthy delight. Pomegranate lowers blood pressure, keeps arteries supple, decreases inflammation in blood vessels, and helps manage cholesterol. Its phenolic antioxidants (also in strawberries) combat oxidative stress, making this an anti-aging tonic.
Serves 2
Throw all of the ingredients into your blender and blast on high for about 1 minute, until smooth and creamy.
