My father gave me wings, my husband lets me fly.
Today we celebrate Father’s Day, and it’s a special one for us because not only do I celebrate my own Father, but also my Father as (now) a Grandfather and my husband, now a Father himself.
I have had a board on Pinterest for a couple years now titled: My Dad. My Hero. The description of the board is simple:
Not for Father’s Day. For everyday.
Follow Sarah’s board My Dad. My Hero. on Pinterest.
….because it’s true, my Father (and Ryan) are heroes each day.
There are many wonderful men I have met along the way, Father’s who do amazing things for their families and their children.
But there are just two men in my life that have made all the difference in who I was then, who I am now and who I’ll be fifty years from now.
One Gave Me Wings
My father gave me wings. He is a quiet and honest man who taught me to be a good person and that “I am enough.” He has been my hero time-and-time again.
And he doesn’t know it.
They say that sometimes the best words spoken are those not spoken at all.
This might be the perfect description of my dad….with few words, but yet somehow I have always known what he thinks, where he stands and what he wants for me. These subtleties in my life gave me wings to fly. They let me know that whatever I wanted to do would be okay, and that when I put my mind, heart and energies somewhere I would succeed.
These wings allowed me to fly, and they showed me the value in finding a man who would allow me to fly and give his own daughter these same wings.
The Other Let Me Fly
My dad has taught me over the years that I am already enough, that I don’t need to have or be anything I don’t want to be or desire to be. Thankfully, Ryan has taken this and let me fly with it.
And while I’m flying, I am now finally able to watch Ryan be the father who gives Samarah her own wings (and I’m not talking about the wings that Freddy the Fly has:) )
There are many days when I feel drained and exhausted from working, starting a business and trying to be the best mother to Samarah I can be, and those days are even harder when Ryan is gone or traveling for work. But the reality is that Ryan is the most amazing father I could ever ask for for my child(ren). He is a true partner in child-crime.
Ryan has always let me fly….from day 1. Since the day my dad gave my hand to him in marriage, he has supported every single thing I’ve done. He might question me sometimes, but ultimately he lets me fly and supports me while flying.
And I see this very same thing with Samarah – in the way he treats her, in the way he loves her. He is going to be her biggest fan. He is going to let her fly, and he is going to give her all the support in the world to make sure she soars….just like my own dad did for me.
I am so thankful for you both -> dad and Ryan! I love you so very, very much.
Love your guts,
SKH
p.s. We just got home from an awesome Father’s Day weekend in Sebastopol. Brunch was at Zazu, and dinner was back at home just the 3 (5 counting our dogs) of us with a meal I made just for Ryan and little reminders of all the love in the world.
