I was invited to a private NOW Foods event in the suburbs of Illinois mid-May.

Yesterday was the San Francisco Hot Chocolate 15K. It was my first race of 2017, first race “back,” and well, sort of a 15K, but not even close.
I recently shared all my big running goals for 2017.
What I didn’t share is that I have been fairly sick since November 10, so heading into all these lofty goals has been super scary for me to imagine getting through much less with a halfway desirable pace.
No, I’m not sick with SIBO, Colitis or anything like that. In fact, as they are concerned, I have been feeling fantastic!
But I got a cold on November 10, and it morphed into a sinus infection. I got antibiotics in Minnesota, and they sort of worked. Once we returned home to California, Ceci got the flu, and then I think I picked up on some version of it plus the sinus stuff returned. I had to get another round of antibiotics late last week, and the doctor said that if it didn’t start subsiding soon, we should run some further tests since it’s been a really long time of illness for me (and up until now, I haven’t taken antibiotics for illness like this in a few years).
I spent the weekend drinking a ton of water and did zero activity until the race. I felt better almost overnight.
Once the race hit yesterday, and I was freely running, I stumbled upon so many ah-ha moments around health, running, and life. And here they are.
The rain never lasts, and after the rain always comes the rainbow.
Upwards and onwards.
Question: If you’re reading this, and you’re a competitive runner, what do you think have been the things that have helped improve your speed most?
p.s. I might be getting “old,” but for all the battles that made up yesterday, 51st out of 531 females aged 30 – 34 made me very happy. And I still have another year in that age group!

My new shoes arrived for Spartan Training, Week 6.
{This post is part of my 101 Days of Blogging series, inspired by Experience Life magazine’s 101 Revolutionary Ways to Be Healthy, authored by Pilar Gerasimo.}
You’ll drink more when it tastes pure and you know it’s clean — and when it’s readily available. If plain water doesn’t turn your crank, enjoy water with a slice of lemon, orange, cucumber, or a splash of juice. Revolutionary Act #41, powered by Experience Life
I got the Reebok All Terrain Super 2.0‘s.
I loved them the first day of training, but after my Thursday run, I had the worst blister that I couldn’t even use them for my long run on Saturday. I still love them, and I think they just need much more time to be broken in.
They have “cleat-like” bottoms, which I already found is great for gripping on those uphill sprints. And seriously, how awesome are they in red, white and blue?! (Note: I realize they are never going to stay looking this good. Even after one day of doing my uphill sprints at the gym, they are dusty and dirty.)
I learned this past week that my body doesn’t want or need 5 days of training. More is not more, and for me, more is just simply not better. During this past year I have worked out zero, then 2 days per week, 3, 4 and now 5.
I am learning that 3-4 is my sweet spot, and for the duration of this training, I’ll do 4 days. I’ll reassess post-race. My workouts have been so hard that 5 days is too much for this recovering autoimmune and adrenal fatigue girl.
Monday: Spartan 300 + general upper body + abs circuit
Tuesday: Legs + 16 uphill bodyweight sprints (8 with 35lb plates + 8 without) + 1/2 round Spartan 300 “Cardio” Circuit
Wednesday: OFF
Thursday: 4-mile run (3 of those miles at 8:10/mile pace)
Friday: Upper body with abs circuit
Saturday: 9-mile run
Sunday: OFF
Susie, who I am doing the race with, told me that the uphill climbs are with 40lb sand bags. For that reason, I increased my uphill sprints from the 25-to-35 pounds. It’s hard, but felt good!
I took the day off from working out yesterday as I had dental work done, and so I’m feeling refreshed and ready for a hard workout early this morning!

The Polar RC3 GPS post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Polar. All opinions are my own. You remember my commitment to y’all, yes?
You already know that I backed out of the Park City, UT Half Marathon, which I was supposed to run next weekend.
But what you don’t know is that this upcoming Nike Women’s Half Marathon (in October) will truly, most likely be the last one I ever do.
I love running. I love the freeing feeling it gives me and the post-runners high that I am fortunate enough to get (I just learned that not everyone gets this. Tragedy.)
But running (and actually most forms of intense anything) isn’t so keen on me anymore.
This post is not for a droopy, dreary session, but it’s coming.
This post is to tell you how the Polar RC3 GPS is pushing me through and making me excited for whatever physical task is at hand.
I received the watch from Polar in the mail about a month ago.
Immediately upon opening it, I was excited.
I mean, just look at it….how could you not be excited to get a workout in?
So I did. I grabbed my gear and headed to the gym for a workout. p.s. Secret: I never typically match when I go to the gym. Another secret: I take old tanks and shorts and convert them into workout clothes all the time.
And then that weekend, I took it for a stroll on an outdoors run (Note: obviously you need to be outside for the GPS to work.)
And then I started learning even more about the watch and getting more detailed with it (<– yes, this is where my obsessive behaviors shine bright).
Once you have your awesome new training tool, you can set it up easily. Make sure to put in all of your current and accurate data. It’s a smart gadget, but it’s not that smart that it knows your sex, age, height, weight, etc. 🙂 The more accurate you are in the beginning, the more accurate numbers you’ll be provided with.
Read through the full user manual if you want.
Or, you can be a rebel like me and just start.
The honest truth is that the watch is worth every penny (I would have gladly bought it – I actually was just about to). It’s not cheap, but as with everything in life – we get what we pay for.
I always have runners and athletes ask me about training tools. I never have anything to tell them….until now.
My runs might not look like they used to. My lifts not quite as strong, and Tabata not as intense as it has been in the past.
But I’m smiling, working my hardest and giving 110% until the Nike Women’s Half Marathon.
If I have to crawl across the finish line, you better believe I will.

The following post is on efficient travel workouts sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Soldier of Steel™.
I’ve been much nicer to myself lately vs. pushing it to the limits, for better or for worse.
One: I foam roll and stretch much more….as in, nearly daily.
Two: Training for the Park City Half Marathon isn’t so planned and programmed.
Three: I’m enjoying while traveling (remember, the 101 days: healing is imminent).
But “nicer” doesn’t mean lazy. If it did, then the way I live would be fad vs. lifestyle.
Not pushing my body to the limits, traveling and enjoying does not mean I sit back and do nothing. I am still training for the half, and I must do something daily….my Colitis (or lack thereof) demands it.
This leads me back to Soldier of Steel™.
I don’t want to spend all day working out while I travel. I’ve chosen efficiency and simply just making the workouts count if I can’t log long mileage.
After I learned about the Soldier of Steel™ workout, I knew I’d be set for a long time with travel and efficient workouts.
Stick with me a second….
Here is a teaser to show you what the workout is all about.
The Soldier of Steel™ Transformational Workout Plan was developed by Mark Twight, Hollywood fitness trainer who pushed the cast and Soldiers with a unique workout plan, helping them to transform for their respective roles in MAN OF STEEL™.
Wrong. You tell yourself those things, but the reality is that for every workout, you have the power to modify it for your own benefit. What I was most excited for with this workout is that it’s 100% planned for you, with a 28-day calendar, instructions, tutorials and more.
Don’t let anything slow you down this summer.
Stay healthy and happy, but do it efficiently to get in, out and on with your life.
And please remember my beautiful Gutsy friends, HOW you choose to move is not as important as THAT you choose to move.
Your gut is desperate for it.
I promise.
