Summer Fun

Why is this list important from a gut health standpoint? Because vitamin D matters in a big way.

Sufficient levels of vitamin D are crucial for calcium absorption in your intestines. Without sufficient vitamin D, your body cannot absorb calcium. Thus, in this scenario, calcium supplements are almost useless.

The good (or bad?) news is that it is nearly impossible to get adequate amounts of vitamin D from your diet.

Sunlight exposure is the only reliable way to generate vitamin D in your own body. Our bodies can produce vitamin D on their own when exposed to sunlight. But the skin must be free of sunscreen, sun blocks and clothing, which all interfere with the process.

And this is good news for you because summer allows far more access to the outdoors and sun.

So, if you want to get more vitamin D, here are 9 gut healthy summer outdoors bucket list ideas.

  1. Get outside

No need to get all fancy. Just get outside. Spend at least 30 minutes outside every single day. It doesn’t matter if you’re just sitting on your front steps or laying out on the beach. The point is to just be outside every chance you get.

  2. Farmers’ Market

Head to your local farmers’ market, and then whip up a delicious meal using the fresh, local ingredients. Choose a variety of items in order to build a powerhouse microbiome.

  3. Sun salutations

Wake up and practice sun salutations. Back when I was an avid am runner, I would take this trail by our house in California. I timed it perfectly so that by the time I hit the end of the trail, the sun would be coming up. In sweat-filled clothes, I would stop and do yoga sun salutations. It was the most beautiful and peaceful way to start the day.

  4. Journal

Find your favorite outdoor spot that’s peaceful and quiet, bring along your journal and write.

  5. Go barefoot

Touch your bare feet to the ground. This is known as Earthing. “It may sound a little strange, but touching the earth (with our bare feet or hands through earthing) may be the biggest key to eliminating our issues with chronic inflammation.” (source)

  6. Walk

Walk outside first thing in the morning to take deep breaths and set the day’s intentions. Or, head out for that walk post-dinner to help your food digest. Staying upright for a while post-meals is optimal.

  7. Sip on some lemonade at the pool

Make a DIY lemonade for gut health, and enjoy it while out at the pool.

  8. Host a BBQ

Invite friends and family over to enjoy a BBQ you put together. The menu is already done for you – Gluten Free Summer BBQ.

  9. Relax in a hammock

Sit in a hammock and relax. Bonus: Make Low-FODMAP Chunky Monkey Nice Cream to keep you company.
