Colic Calm Gripe Water has been a lifesaver for Samarah’s baby belly.
But you should know that Colic Calm, Gripe Water, Colic Calm Gripe Water or whatever one chooses to call it are not all the same.
{Full disclosure: Clicking on and buying the one I use is an affiliate link, and I do make money from it.}
Samarah is an awesome baby, but we still have tummy issues. And like her mama, tummy issues lead to fussing, crying, throwing, screaming, grumpiness.
Colic Calm Gripe Water – not all are created equally
Not all Colic Calm is created equally.
As soon as we got Samarah and I realized that she was Gutsy baby, I immediately bought Sally Fallon’s, “The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child Care” (recommended from a friend).
Everyone kept telling me to go out and get Gripe Water. I hurried to Babies ‘R’ Us and got me this one. I brought it home, not thinking twice about the fact that not all Colic Calm Gripe Water is created equally.
And then I looked at the back to find a mess of an ingredient list. We returned the Gripe Water immediately. Surely this is not what Sally was talking about.
(Side note: I cannot find the exact ingredients for that Babies ‘R’ Us Gripe Water anywhere online. The front of the box states, “Natural herbal supplement that does not contain alcohol, artificial flavors, artificial color, yeast, wheat, gluten, soy or dairy.” That said, I am certain there were nasty things in it that made me return it. I’m too lazy to go into Babies ‘R’ Us today to look up the ingredients, and I have contacted the store twice already with no response. IF you have a bottle of it laying around, can you let me know the ingredients?)
I’m fairly confident the product contained many things, one being sodium bicarbonate.
Sally Fallon stated in her book, “Be sure to avoid products containing sodium bicarbonate as this will raise the natural pH of baby’s stomach acid and make digestion more difficult.”
So I re-visited the book to find the Colic Calm Sally Fallon recommended, “Colic Calm Gripe Water.”
We bought the one she recommended, and have never looked back.
So what’s in Colic Calm?
A homeopathic blend of chamomile, fennel, caraway, peppermint, ginger, aloe, lemon balm, blackthorn and vegetable charcoal. You can learn more about each of those ingredients HERE. (For the record, I still believe that using aloe internally is super debatable.)
4 Main Reasons Why we love Colic Calm Gripe Water
- It works instantly. I kid you not, we give her a small dose and she is calm.
- Healing. Not only does it work for an “instant relief,” but it also contains ingredients that help the gut heal and thrive in general (both of which we need for our Gutsy baby).
- She loves it. It tastes good. It’s so natural that you can give it a try for yourself before giving it to your baby. The taste is kind of sweet, which clearly is a huge bonus.
- And it’s natural! I won’t lie to you. We do have to have her on acid reflux medication for the time being. And we do have to visit Children’t Hospital Oakland to make sure nothing major is wrong with her little baby tummy, and so for now, even having one natural and holistic form of gut “help” for her makes me feel better.
Colic Calm Gripe Water are not all created equally, and I hope I’ve helped you choose the very best for your baby’s tummy….not just for the sake of s/he, but also for the sanity of everyone in your household.
