Do your healthy thing with a pal or partner. Camaraderie, connection and accountability go a long way toward creating long-term success.
Day 87 of 101 days of blogging reminds us that in this life, we are better off doing things with a buddy.
When it comes to health and wellness, sometimes a buddy is not only wanted, but in fact needed.
While finalizing the first ever #Gutsy Newsletter this week, I wrote (and p.s. If you click that link for the Newsletter you will have advanced access to my brand new Gluten-Free, Ginger-Chocolate Crumb Cake recipe):
Prior to sitting down to write this, I returned to my food journal from a day in late September, 2007. What I came across was not only shocking visually, but it also struck me to the core. These foods filled that page: French vanilla sugar-free syrup, splenda + equal, blueberry muffin, saltwater taffy, Life Savers fruit tarts, white kaiser bun, chili with hamburger, raspberry cheesecake and oh-so-much more. And these symptoms accompanied it: stuffy nose, scratchy throat, achy from the knees down, achy fingers, tingling lower legs and parts of arms and dizzy plus disoriented.
Shortly after, I got myself my very own “buddy” (aka a holistic nutritionist). Having her there for several months helped me make the leap from misery to a healing and rewarding journey.
Even if you don’t choose me as your “buddy,” I strongly, strongly recommend you find one.
I promise it will make all the difference.
Straight from the Gut
The #Gutsy Digestive Virtual Book Club began this week.
Can I just say that I am loving on this book already?!
Remember, this week (through October 7, 2012) we are focusing on the first 3 chapters:
- Straight from the Gut
- Your Own Personal Nutrition Factory
- The Living World Inside You
I’m already done with all 3. I can’t put the book down. And even though I have already studied in great depth everything contained in those 3 chapters, I still enjoyed them and got a new perspective.
A few things from chapter 1: Straight from the Gut
- On page 6, he mentions a conversation with a man. He asks the man, “Any recent illnesses or new medication you are taking?” The man responds, “None that come to mind,” then paused. “Actually, about ten days ago I did have a tooth abscess and my doctor put me on an antibiotic. But that wouldn’t cause all these symptoms would it?”
- Two things to note about that: One, our gut issues begin at “trigger point;” after a major surgery, infection, life event, illness. And two, antibiotics kill the gut. Combine those two things and it’s very easy to understand why the question about recent illness and medication is vital. I always ask it!
- This stat amazed me: “Some 90 million Americans will see their doctors this year because of a “stomachache” — the result of constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux, or any number of other conditions linked to improper care of the gut. That’s more than will suffer from cancer and cardiovascular disease combined. In fact, the only thing more common that gut distress is the common cold.” (p 11) And yet, not many care enough about the gut to engage in prevention until it’s too late and an intervention is required.
- Additional dietary steps: On page 14 he mentions 4 additional dietary steps. Just so you know, I will not be able to always agree with everything he – or anyone else – says. Just because it’s in writing, doesn’t always make it right for everyone. I believe in healthy debate and alternative thoughts – not just for me, but for you as well. I agree with some of his steps; not all, and not 100%. Of course more thoughts on food will come throughout the book.
Question: What do you think of the book so far? Thoughts or questions?! Have you blogged about it, and are you interested in sharing like Lisa did with “Gutsy Book Club?”
Tomorrow is day 88. Topic:

It’s amazing looking back and seeing what people think is healthy… so many people fall for the “low calorie” marketing trap. One of my peeves.
